Fort Drum is home to the 10th Mountain Division and is located in Jefferson County, New York. The primary mission of the 10th Mountain division is the command of the active units assigned to the base, providing support to all the tenant units as well as supporting over 80,000 troops that are deployed annually. On post housing is more difficult to obtain at Fort Drum as the population grows. The availability of off-post housing is more plentiful with single family dwellings, duplexes, and townhomes. The Fort Drum Community Homes office is responsible for managing over 2,500 homes on post as well as a list of available homes for rent and sale off base. Military personnel are advised to check in at the Fort Drum Welcome Home Center located in Clark Hall, Building P-10720. Temporary lodging is available at the Fort Drum Inn in their Efficiency Room Lodging and Cottages. Reservations can be made by calling 315-772-8154 or DSN 312-772-8154. The Fort Drum Inn offers temporary accommodations for those troops permanently stationed at Fort Drum. Accommodations can be improved for up to 30 days if personnel are on a waiting list for more permanent housing.
Fort Drum has no schools on base. Students living on base attend schools in the Indian River Central School District or the Carthage Central School District. Bus transportation is provided by children who live on post. Several Christian and Roman Catholic schools in Jefferson County, and information can be obtained by the School Liaison Office. Educational programs for students with exceptional needs and the Exceptional Family Member Program are other options through the office which can be contacted at 315-772-3214. There are over a dozen school districts for children living off post. Child and Youth Services offer programs that include full day, part day, and hourly child care as well as before and after school programs. Chapel Drive and Memorial Child Development Centers offer programs for children 6 weeks to kindergarten.
